Silverton policeman on murder charge for killing ex-wife
“The wife, who was working as a switchboard operator, was at the hospital entrance when the suspect fired several shots and instantly killed the victim.”
A 39-year-old police sergeant stationed at the Silverton rapid rail unit is facing a charge of premeditated murder for allegedly killing his 35-year-old pregnant ex-wife.
According to NPA regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, the policeman, Jonnas Tebogo Mpete, appeared in the Brits magistrate’s court on Tuesday for allegedly gunning down his ex-wife Ntombizodwa Khumalo in a hospital parking area on April 5.
The sergeant handed himself over to the Brits police later that same day, for the alleged murder.
The policeman is reported to be a resident of Ga-Rankuwa.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, leading to the murder, Mpete had gone to a Brits hospital where his ex-wife worked.
“The wife, a switchboard operator, was at the hospital entrance when the suspect fired several shots and instantly killed the victim.”
Mahanjana said “through his attorney, the accused told the court that he has a previous conviction for corruption, and is awaiting a sentence at Pretoria specialised commercial crimes court on April 19”.
“It was also brought to the attention of the court that the ex-wife obtained a protection order against the accused in 2021.”
She said the case was postponed to April 21 for further investigation and bail application.
