Mams West police nab 22 suspects over Easter weekend

“The men and women in blue will continue to work hard to fight crime in Mamelodi,” says police spokesperson, Sergeant Daphney Maila.

Mamelodi West police ensured that law breakers tasted justice during the Easter weekend.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Daphney Maila said the police arrested 22 suspects for various crimes, including illegal immigrants.

She said the suspects were arrested from April 6 to 10.

“The suspects were arrested by the men and women in blue and the detectives working tirelessly over the weekend to keep Mamelodi residents safe,” said Maila.

The police arrested eight illegal immigrants, two for employing of illegal immigrants, two for malicious damage to property, two for burglary at residential places, one for murder, two for assault, three for common assault and two for intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Maila said the murder suspect handed himself to the police after his victim had been declared dead in hospital.

“The murder suspect and the deceased got into an argument based on the allegations that the deceased stole his clothes,” she said.

“They ended up fighting whereby the suspect used a knife to stab the deceased.”

Maila said the men and women in blue would continue to work hard to fight crime with the objective of reducing crime in Mamelodi.

“We want to disrupt criminals from their unlawful ways by ensuring that safety of the inhabitants within the precinct remains top priority,” she said.

Acting station commander Col. Simon Makgopa applauded police officers for their respective duties and welcomed the arrests while commending the outstanding breakthroughs.

All the suspects are expected to appear in the Mamelodi magistrate’s court this week.

The police further encouraged the public to report any suspicious person to the police on 08600 10 111.
