Queenswood girl (10) with cancer needs community’s help
“Doctors are telling us they want to amputate her leg but we want to avoid that at all costs,” says Demi’s mum, Belinda.

Demi Labuschagne (10) and her family’s lives were turned upside down when doctors discovered an Ewing Sarcoma in her right knee.
The Queenswood girl’s family first discovered something was amiss when she suffered numerous falls and seemed to struggle to keep her balance.
Demi’s mum, Belinda took her to many doctors to find out what was wrong.
“We saw that her leg was starting to swell and it just got worse and worse and we had to do something about it.”
In December last year, a doctor found the sarcoma in her leg.
The family was devastated to hear the terrible news and Demi started chemo treatment at Steve Biko hospital.
“She’s done six sessions of chemo and it has been very difficult for her.”
Demi is unable to walk and is restricted to a wheelchair.
She can’t attend school and suffers bouts of nausea due to the chemo.
Currently the family’s aim is to rescue her leg and prevent amputation.
“Doctors are telling us they want to amputate her leg but we want to avoid that at all costs,” said Belinda.
Fortunately there is light at the end of the tunnel in the form of a doctor in the Cape who specialises in cases like Demi’s.
Currently the family is doing everything it can to gather the funds to see if this doctor can rescue her leg.
“We want her to have a normal life as a child and not be left in a wheelchair for the rest of her life.”
The Labuschagnes are a single income family and the treatment has been tough on their finances.
They have arranged a fun walk for Saturday at Toutrek Park in Rietfontein from 14:00 to 18:00 to raise funds.
