Hammanskraal water receives chunk of city budget
“Today (Wednesday) MMC Sutton is presenting a budget in which the largest allocation is made towards the refurbishment of the Rooiwal wastewater treatment plant,” said Mayor Cilliers Brink.

The long-standing problem of poor quality water delivered to the people of Hammanskraal is an issue that cannot be ignored any longer.
This was said by Number One Tshwane citizen Cilliers Brink on Wednesday on the sidelines of his administration’s budget speech at Tshwane House.
Brink said the metro has reached the end of a long line of failures and excuses.
“Today (Wednesday) MMC Sutton is presenting a budget in which the largest allocation is made towards the refurbishment of the Rooiwal wastewater treatment plant.
“We are committing R450-million and in the next three years R150-million in each year’s budget,” he said.
Meanwhile, South African national civic organisation (Sanco) in Tshwane wants every one involved in the failed Rooiwal water plant held accountable.
Sanco spokesperson Abraham Mashishi said the metro needed to take action against those found wanting on the Rooiwal project.
“We know that we are in alliance with the ANC but whoever was involved in messing up the tendering process must answer.
“People have lost lives because of this, as the civic organisation we want answers from the municipality,” Mashishi added.
City manager Johann Mettler said the contract awarded to CMS, NJR and Blackhead to upgrade the water works was supposed to be completed in May last year but hit delays.
Mettler said the municipality has increased the capacity of Rooiwal from 110 million litres per day to 250 million litres.
He said the contract was cancelled in August for alleged poor performance and a forensic investigation subsequently found its awarding irregular.
The metro was thrust into the national spotlight this week following the death of 17 people in Hammanskraal from cholera.
