60 000 meals packed in two hours for charity
The Rise Against Hunger event will feed 260 children five meals a week for an entire year.
Centurion residents came together this past Saturday, to put together food packs to feed children in need.
Around 160 volunteers packed a record 60 000 meals in just two hours, enough to feed the children five meals a week for an entire year.
Lynne van der Hoven of the Centurion Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints said that the meal packs would feed 260 children.
“These meals are distributed to early childhood development centres with children between 1-6 years old,” said Van der Hoven.

One of the volunteers Masana Zondi, said: “Besides getting some family time in for a few hours, the fantastic music being played had everyone young and old bopping their heads, tapping feet and packing in tune. It was heartwarming to see so many people selflessly giving of their time to come together for such a great cause.”
“Looking forward to the next one!”

60 000 MEALS THAT WERE PACKED WILL FEED 260 CHILDREN
The 60 000 meals that were packed will feed 260 children.
It includes five meals a week for an entire year according to the event organisers.
The meals that Rise Against Hunger packed come from corporate donations and are highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprising soya, rice, vegetables and 23 essential vitamins and minerals.
The meals have a one-year shelf life and only require water and a basic stovetop to cook.
Madeleine Broodryk and her daughter Kelly attended the event for the first time. “The aim… 60 000 parcels in two hours… what a target! The music started and we experienced two hours of so much fun whilst packing food parcels surrounded by a community of people who want to make a difference in the lives of their fellow man. We met our target!”
Gareth Armstrong said, “I’m really grateful that I was able to be involved not just because of the meals that we were able to prepare, but because of the unity that was felt by all during the two hours that we were there”.
Rise Against Hunger has been packing such hampers for five years, with the next packing event in spring this year.
