Brooklyn crime highlighted as bad seed in east
“R70 million of the SAPS budget in this financial year will go to all provinces to support CPFs in terms of their resource requirements."
Brooklyn police station in the east of Pretoria made it to a list of the top 30 police stations plagued by serious crime across the country.
This was according to the latest crime statistics released by police minister Bheki Cele.
The statistics cover the period from January to March 2023 and also show an increase in serious crimes reported at several Tshwane police stations.
Boschkop police station had a 50% increase in murders while recording a 28.6 % drop in sexual offences.
Bronkhorstspruit saw a reduction in contact crimes in the fourth quarter with 311 crimes from January to March 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, which recorded 339 cases.
CONTACT CRIMES THAT INCREASED IN BRONKHORSTSPRUIT:
– Sexual cases were registered at 18 from 17 in 2022.
– Attempted murder 8 from six n 2022.
– Common robberies 30 from 17 in 2022.
– Aggravated robberies such as robberies in residential areas increased to 13 from 10 in 2022.
Burglaries in non-residential areas increased to 58 from 37 and shopliftings were registered at 13 from 10.
Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition increased to 12 from two cases in the previous quarter.
BROOKLYN POLICE STATION
Brooklyn police station recorded two murders compared to the zero of the previous quarter.
The station also registered great improvement with a 100% decrease in attempted murders compared to the three cases of January 2022.
The station had a 4.7% increase in “trio” crimes (car hijacking, robbery at residential and non-residential premises).
The station saw a 66.7% drop in murders and a 50% increase in assaults with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm.
Brooklyn police station recorded an increase in total contact crimes with 351 cases against 339 cases in 2022.
CONTACT CRIMES THAT INCREASED IN BROOKLYN:
Murder rose to 2.
Common robberies registered 147 cases from 135 in 2022.
Robbery with aggravating circumstances stood at 125 from 110 in 2022.
Drug-related crimes rose by five compared to 24 total cases in 2022.
CULLINAN POLICE STATION
Cullinan police station also saw an increase in contact crimes with the January to March stats in 2023 sitting at 168 compared to 151 in 2022.
Crimes with intent to cause grievous bodily harm increased to 13 (in 2022 the stats were at 12)
Common assaults increased to 100 (in 2022 the stats were at 91), while robberies with aggravating circumstances were at 31 (In 2022 the cases sat at 22).
GARSFONTEIN STATION
Garsfontein station had a 56.8% decrease in trio crimes, recording only 16 cases in the first three months of this year.
At Garsfontein police station, contact crimes dropped by 45 from 149 cases in 2022.
Crimes with intent to cause grievous bodily harm increased to 15 (in 2022 the stats were at 10)
Common assaults increased to 43 (in 2022 the stats were at 40).
SILVERTON POLICE STATION
The Silverton police station also noted a decrease in contact crimes with 344 cases compared to 392 in 2022.
Sexual assault cases stood at 4 maintaining the same statistics as in 2022.
Burglaries in non-residential areas rose to 47 compared to 31 cases registered in 2022.
Burglaries at residential premises stood at an unmoved 84, while theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles increased to 55, from 48 in 2022 and theft out of motor vehicles rose to 79 from 62 in 2022.
SAFETY STATS
According to the automobile association of South Africa, only 31% of citizens in the country felt safe.
In a statement, it said that 37% of citizens feel either “barely safe” (22%) or “not safe at all” (15%) in South Africa.
The stats were accumulated through researchers in the SoS Report conducted in March and April with 1 438 respondents giving feedback on personal security in South Africa.
Cele said the police service was calling on a “whole government whole society” approach to fight crime.
“We again call on government at all levels, to support policing efforts by addressing the country’s drivers of crime. Without community participation, Police will never win the war against crime.”
He said in a demonstration of his service; a commitment to work hand in glove with communities was the funding of CPFs.
“R70-million of the SAPS budget in this financial year will go to all provinces to support CPFs in terms of their resource requirements.
“This funding will mean CPF members are not short of protective clothing, torches, communication material and other tools of the trade to enable them to be fit for purpose.”
Cele said community policing remained a vital part of the overall strategy to push back on crime.
