Salvokop development will create thousands of jobs
It is an ongoing project that will include the construction of five national government client departments’ head offices, which will be permanently accommodated there.
An estimated 3 215 jobs will be created during the first phase of a so-called “mixed-use precinct project” in Salvokop, west of the Tshwane city centre.
This was revealed during an oversight visit to the development by public works and infrastructure minister Sihle Zikalala.
The development is an ongoing project that will include the construction of five national government departments’ head offices, which will be permanently accommodated there.
It is part of the Tshwane inner city regeneration programme.
“The first department whose head office is already finalised is StatsSA. The development continues apace and will see the remaining four government head offices constructed in the precinct,” he said.
FIVE DEPARTMENTS
According to the department, it aims to house five departments – South African Security Agency
National Development Agency
Department of Higher Education and Training
Department of Home Affairs and Department of Correctional Services.
“This project demonstrates the government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure development, enabling sustained economic growth and job creation as well as bringing the construction sector back to life.”
The development was gazetted as a strategic integrated project (SIP) as part of the infrastructure investment plan approved by the cabinet in May 2020.
Key benefits include economic transformation and job creation.
“Spatial integration, human settlements, local government, and mixed-use precinct with land use rights in place for government, business, institutional and private open space creates equal access to schooling, housing, work
opportunities, transport and recreational facilities,” the department said.
“This project will contribute to the NDP 2030 and sustainable development goals by responding to the green economy with sustainable buildings and precinct design, maximising solar power, rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, planting over 700 indigenous trees and establishing public parks.”
The mixed-use precinct project was launched last year in November by then-minister in the department, Patricia de Lille.
