Video of monkeys swimming in water tankers at Pretoria hospital ‘fake’

“Jubilee District Hospital and other facilities in Gauteng do not use black water tankers.”

A video of monkeys purportedly swimming at Jubilee district hospital in Hammanskraal has been slammed as being fake.

Gauteng health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba assured the public that the video of monkeys swimming in black water tankers was not taken at Jubilee or any public health facilities in the province.

“Jubilee and other facilities in Gauteng do not use black water tankers. Departmental health facilities use green JoJo tankers and water supplied by local authorities. Water utilities to our hospitals and clinics are clean and can be used for human consumption and other services.”

Modiba said it was irresponsible for people to circulate unverified content on social media as it has the potential to cause panic among patients, their families and communities who depend on public health facilities for healthcare services.

MONKEY VIDEO A FAKE

“The same video was shared earlier this year and those who shared it insinuated that it was depicting the situation at Helen Joseph Hospital at the time when the facility was experiencing water supply shortages.”

He said the department traced the video to YouTube V6 News, which captioned its first posting in April 2022 as follows: “Monkeys Bath In Water Tanks In Narsingapur”.

He urged social media users and the general public to condemn any material aimed at misleading and causing unnecessary panic amongst the public.

“We encourage the public to report pages that continue to use and distribute such content as anyone that creates or spreads fake news about the department or any other facility can be charged with crimen injuria and is liable for prosecution.”
