Food delivery driver hijacked in Lyttelton
“The problem is that from our side it just looks like an order from a customer. They use the apps and then track us,” says Edward Kenayi, after he was hijacked at gunpoint.
A fast food delivery driver was hijacked in Lyttelton near Trichardt Road and Cradock Avenue just before 19:00 on Monday.
Edward Kenayi said that his bike and his cell phone were stolen in the incident.
Kenyai said that he was shaken by the incident, but would be returning to work once he had his bike again.
“I am fine, the only damage was to the bike where they removed the seat trying to find the tracker.
“The problem is that from our side it just looks like an order from a customer. They use the apps and then track us,” said Kenayi.
“When I arrived at the address, I made a call and no one responded. No one came to the gate.”
Kenayi said that this was when two men approached him from the corner.
“They pointed a gun at me and told me to not move or do anything.
“My bike was still idling – they took my bike and pushed me to the ground and searched my pockets.”
His bike was recovered shortly after the incident and Kenayi said he was at the police station when his bike was recovered.
“I called the office to report the hijacking and they activated the tracker.”
Kenayi said he was grateful to a female bystander who helped him after the incident.
“She was the first person there; she ran to the security to try to get the security to chase them.”
He said that he would return to work as soon as he got his bike back from the police.
“I will do this work again because there are no other options for me.”
Bystanders were walking from a nearby garage when they said they heard his cry for help.
“Suddenly two bikes came riding past us,” said Nedene Bezuidenhout.
“One of them was a delivery driver and the other was unmarked. [Kenayi] came running towards us, and he told us they stole his bike and his phone.
“I immediately used the Namola app to contact the police. He went to the Lyttelton police after it happened,” she said.
“My girlfriend and I were luckily not alone. It happened so quickly.
“There isn’t a single streetlight here so it is completely dark. You can’t have a dark city like this; the criminals take advantage,” said Bezuidenthout.
Lyttelton police could not be reached for comment by the time of publication.
