950 garbage bags collected for World Environment Day

The clean-up took place in Saulsville West of Pretoria at the Moganwe River.

Various organisations led by the Soulbent Project collected 950 bags of litter during a recent clean-up for World Environment Day.

The clean-up took place in Saulsville West of Pretoria at the Moganwe River.

“World Environment Day is a reminder that people’s actions regarding plastic pollution matter. The steps governments and businesses are taking to tackle plastic pollution are the consequence of this action,” said co-founder, Mashudu Makhado.

“It is time to accelerate this action and transition to a circular economy. It is time to #BeatPlasticPollution,” Makhado continued.

The Soulbent Project partnered with the Gauteng department of agriculture and rural development (GDARD) alongside numerous other stakeholders.

GDARD environmental project manager Allen Masakgone Maoto said the event went very well. “GDARD has been a big partner of Soulbent, supporting their events and initiatives – especially those concerning environmental management. We support them with litter pickers, refuse bags and hand gloves,” Maoto stated.

Maoto added that it was heartwarming to watch the community of Saulsville, young and old come out in their numbers to support the clean-up effort.

Volunteers were educated on the importance of keeping a clean environment as pollution affects everyone.

“It is important for our people to respect the environment so that it also respects them by giving back healthy oxygen coming from a clean and healthy environment for the people to live in. It is also important to educate our kids at a young age as well about waste management,” Maoto continued.
