Dog poisoning rears head again in Moot
"Most commonly the poison is disguised in a cheap sausage that is thrown over the fence."
Dog poisoning has reared its ugly head in the Moot again, the local CPF warned.
“It is usually a handful of criminals that resort to it,” said Moot CPF chairperson Elsabe Weyers.
“This usually means that your premises or surrounding premises are targeted by criminals.
“Please alert your neighbours and the police when any dog poisonings happen.”
Weyers added that the most frequently used poison called Aldicarb or “two-step” was often disguised in meat.
“Most commonly, the poison is disguised in a cheap sausage that is thrown over the fence.”
Weyers had the following tips:
– Keep pets away from the front garden where poisoning most frequently occurs.
– Keep your dogs indoors or away from the front fence at night.
– Inspect your garden before you let your dogs out.
– Do not touch any suspicious object with your bare hands.
– Pick it up with hands protected by surgical gloves or a plastic bag and put it in a bag and seal it well. Inform the police and keep the evidence safe.
DRUNKEN DRIVING
The Moot CPF in partnership with the police had a successful week in combating drunken driving in the area.
“During an operation for drink and drive, the Moot police station made six arrests.
“We once again want to send out a stern message to all the community that we do not tolerate drinking and driving.”
A member of Mike Bolhuis’ K9 unit, who is trained as a vet, said there are steps dog owners can take in the event of a dog poisoning.
“There are three things you need to do immediately once the dog has been poisoned.
“Keep atropine at your house. This will induce vomiting.
“One person should call the vet while another gets the car ready. Administer the atropine and drive to the vet immediately.”
Bolhuis and his team can be contacted via WhatsApp on 082 447 6116.
