Sanral to close off parts of N1 for installation of power lines this weekend

On Saturday, the road will be closed from 06:00 to 18:00 and again on Sunday from 06:00 to 12:00 for a distance of six kilometres.

Sanral warned Tshwane motorists of a possible N1 road closure between the Kosmosdal-Samrand and the Rooihuiskraal interchanges this coming weekend.

According to the agency, the set closure would take place in stages.

“The closures will come into effect during the upcoming weekend, allowing Eskom to install new overhead transmission power lines and a conductor,” Sanral said in a statement.

The road closure is expected to take place from Saturday, June 10 to Sunday, June 11.

On Saturday, the road will be closed from 06:00 to 18:00 and again on Sunday from 06:00 to 12:00 for a distance of six kilometres.

“However, complete closures may be needed when cables are being pulled across the road. Adjustments to the closure schedule may also be made depending on weather conditions at the time.”

SANRAL STRESSED FUTHER DELAYS AND DISRUPTION

Sanral stressed that this work could lead to disruptions and delays in motorists’ regular travel, particularly in the afternoon.

Spokesperson Vusi Mona said temporary signs would be erected to assist with redirecting traffic to alternative routes.

“Officials from the Johannesburg and Tshwane metro police departments will be deployed to manage traffic flow in the affected area. To navigate around the closures, motorists will be directed to use the R101 detour route,” said Mona.

In addition, the agency urged motorists to check official announcements with regard to the road closures.

This comes after the catastrophic collapse of the Eskom 132kv high-voltage overhead power line last month. At the time, the collapse was initially linked to the structural failure of various electricity pylons.

However, upon thorough investigation, it was concluded the collapse was due to vandalism.
