Tshwane police arrest over 900 people during week-long operation
Follow-up inspections will be conducted to monitor compliance and the rectification of irregularities found at police stations.
Drug possession, public drinking and gender-based violence made up the bulk of the arrests made by the Tshwane police during their recent week-long Operation Shanela.
The police arrested 997 individuals and five illegal firearms were recovered during the operation to highlight the police’s commitment to community safety.
In the Hammanskraal policing area, 62 260 ml of liquor was confiscated due to violations of the Liquor Act, while 70 packets of nyaope and 18 syringes were found during searches.
Warrant officer Johann van Dyk said in Eersterust, three people were arrested for drug possession when 0.08 grams of crystal meth was found in their possession.
“Additionally, one person was arrested for possession of 2 780 illicit cigarettes.”
During the operation which started on October 5 focusing on Erasmia and Laudium, 61 undocumented immigrants were arrested, along with one person found in possession of illicit cigarettes, and 320 of these cigarettes were seized.
Van Dyk said that a roadblock during the operation resulted in the issuance of 149 Aarto infringement notices, totalling R 64 150.
“Seventeen liquor outlets were inspected, with two being closed for contravening the liquor act, leading to the confiscation of 142 650 ml of liquor.
Concurrently, detectives from police stations in the city apprehended 304 suspects wanted for various crimes, including 94 related to GBV.”
Rietgat SAPS conducted an operation in their area, leading to one person being arrested for possession of drugs.
Three liquor outlets were inspected and searched, resulting in the closure of two, with 25 680 ml of liquor confiscated.
“Tshwane District also reported several recoveries of unlicensed firearms during the past week.
All seized firearms will undergo ballistic analysis to determine any potential involvement in other criminal activity.”
The success of the operation was achieved through collaboration among the departments of home affairs, labour, correctional services and community safety, as well as crime prevention wardens, Tracker, Gauteng traffic, Tshwane metro police, the private security industry regulatory authority, local councillors, CPFs, and SAPS members from different units and stations within the district.
Van Dyk said “To improve service delivery and ensure compliance with internal policies, several stations in the district were inspected during the past weeks.
Senior officers from Operation Shanela conducted inspections at Atteridgeville, Laudium, Boschkop, Bronkhorstspruit and Cullinan.
Various departments at the stations were inspected and subsequent mistakes were highlighted for corrective measures, compliance, and implementation of internal directives and policies,” he said.
District commissioner, Major-General Azwinndini Nengovhela, extended his appreciation and congratulations to all members who selflessly participated in the successful operations and contributed to the recovery of firearms.
