Fines were also issued to various drinking establishments for contravening the Liquor Act.

“The operation comes after the police received a tip that a woman was planning to transport medication to another country illegally,” said police spokesperson, Constable Thabang Nkhumise.

“Upon arrival at Bosman, she was approached and searched and medication worth about R12 640 was recovered hidden inside a luggage bag under some washing soaps. She was then taken to Pretoria Central SAPS and charged with contravention of the Medication Act of 107 of 1965,” Nkhumise said.

Station commander, Brigadier Gibin Hlengane Mashaba welcomed the arrests and said it is important that police visibility is enhanced in the CBD to prevent corruption and other crimes.

“Shebeens should ensure that they have relevant documentation and are registered for business as this will be a continuous fight by all the law enforcement agencies that crime is kept to a minimum,” Mashaba stated.

Mashaba also emphasised the importance of whistleblowing, reminding residents that any person can report crime anonymously by utilising all the information online on social platforms or using the Crime Stop line such as 08600 10111, 112 or calling the station on 012 353 4000.

The organisations involved in the effort included the Pretoria Central SAPS, home affairs, metro police, national traffic police, community safety entities (wardens and patrollers), CPF and private security firms.

All the arrested people appeared in the Pretoria magistrate’s court earlier today.
