Tshwane warns of possible ‘disruptive rain’
A yellow level 4 warning was issued and excessive rain may cause localised flooding of susceptible low-lying areas, informal settlements and susceptible roads.
The Tshwane emergency services (EMS) calls on all residents to remain alert for possible “disruptive rain” following a Yellow Level 4 warning issued by the SA Weather Service (Saws) on January 11.
According to EMS spokesperson Deputy Chief Charles Mabaso, the “disruptive rain” may include localised flooding of susceptible low-lying areas, informal settlements and roads.
Mabaso said minor to major vehicle accidents due to poor driving visibility and slippery roads may also occur.
“The rain may cause localised service disruptions due to power failures as well as localised damage due to large amounts of small hail,” Mabaso said.
The emergency services issued the following safety measures:
– If possible, stay indoors and away from metal objects
– Do not seek shelter under trees or tall objects
– Do not go fishing or play golf, as golf clubs and fishing rods are good conductors of electricity
– Avoid crossing flooded low-lying roads, bridges and swollen streams
– Be aware that any combination of hail, strong winds, heavy rain and/or excessive lighting can accompany storms
“We further call on residents to be vigilant and to immediately report any fire or emergencies on 107 (toll-free) or on 012 358 6300/6400. For ambulance services, call 112 (toll-free),” Mabaso said.
Residents are also encouraged to heed the warnings and alerts issued by the Saws and other credible sources.
