Mamelodi police arrest foreign national for possession of illegal firearm
The police came across a group of men while patrolling Mamelodi East Ext 6. A black plastic bag with a firearm and bullets was found in the suspect's possession.
Police have arrested a 20-year-old foreign national for possession of an unlicensed firearm and bullets, as well as contravention of the Immigration Act, in Mamelodi on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Constable Penelope Khulong said the suspect was arrested by Mamelodi East police during an operation.
Khulong said the police came across a group of men in Ext 6 and requested permission to search them.
A black plastic bag with a firearm and five bullets was found in the suspect’s possession.
“The suspect could not produce a licence and further did not have any legal documentation to be in the country and was subsequently arrested,” said Khulong.
The acting station commander, Colonel Tsebe, has welcomed the arrest and further applauded the officers for ensuring that they prioritise the safety of the community of Mamelodi East.
The public was also advised to report any suspicious person to the police on 08600 10 111.
