Illegal connections targeted during Ya Tima in West

The mayor says the west struggles with illegal connections, immigrants and illegally erected structures.

The metro, under the leadership of Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya, has conducted a Tshwane Ya Tima campaign in Pretoria West to address rampant illegal connections.

The campaign took place on August 26, and was a collaborative effort between the TMPD and the metro’s group property division with MMC of Corporate and Shared Services and Bad Buildings Committee chairperson, Kholofelo Morodi.

Its first stop was to disconnect electricity and water at properties that were illegally built, some occupied by hundreds of tenants.

“The city has a court order that will be enforced to demolish these buildings. The structures are unsafe and pose serious danger to occupants,” Moya said, speaking at one of the properties.

“These cables were linked to three properties. Most of the properties we disconnected today are occupied by undocumented foreigners who pay rentals to landlords who don’t pay their utility bills,” she added.

Officials disconnected electricity and water to three properties. One has several illegally built structures that the mayor said would be demolished in the next two weeks.

“You know that we have a longstanding issue here in Pretoria West, where we have a court order to demolish illegal buildings erected by [developer George] Asaba. This is not the only issue we’re dealing with; we want to bring services to Pretoria West, but we don’t want to bring them to people who do not pay for services. There are a lot of illegal immigrants who are here, and a lot of municipal properties that are hijacked,” Moya said.

The drive formed part of the preparations towards next month’s investment summit, where the metro aims to bring R5-billion worth of investments into the city to stimulate economic growth.

The summit is also in line with the metro’s Tshwane Economic Revitalisation Strategy (TERS), adopted by council in April.

Some of the properties in Pretoria West that will be up for auction include:

– Tshwane Events Centre, formerly known as the Pretoria Showgrounds, to support business tourism.

– The Tshwane Fresh Produce Market, to support agriculture and agro-processing capabilities

– The Pretoria West Power Station, to address waste-to-energy needs.
