Rotary Awards night celebrates service leadership

The Rotary Club of Pretoria Capital celebrated community heroes with awards for volunteerism, vocational excellence, and vital partnerships

The Rotary Club of Pretoria recently hosted its annual awards evening, an occasion marked by gratitude, vision, and celebration of individuals and partners who embody the Rotary spirit of ‘Service Above Self’.

The event, presided over by club president Mariana Purnell alongside management members, and past president of the district David Katerere, highlighted how everyday acts of dedication ripple out to transform communities.

One of the most moving moments of the evening was the presentation of the Community Service Award for Outstanding Volunteerism or Social Impact to Helen Alpino Eleni.

Known as a dedicated volunteer and community activist, Eleni has become a trusted voice in her neighbourhood, keeping residents informed about pressing practical matters such as roads, safety, and electricity supply.

“She is a natural problem-solver,” Purnell remarked, “someone who listens, addresses concerns, and always responds with wisdom and action.”

She said that her work reminds communities that civic responsibility begins with individuals willing to notice problems and commit to finding solutions.

The Vocational Excellence Award was handed to Aris Ruyter, a community safety leader whose visionary work has strengthened collaboration between diverse groups.

As the founding director of the Alpha Security Forum, a non-profit that unites SAPS, private security companies, and community forums, Ruyter has pioneered intelligence-sharing tools that have made communities safer and more cohesive.

His leadership in the Garsfontein CPF team reflects what true vocational excellence means: using professional expertise to serve others and safeguard dignity.

Rotary also honoured a unique partnership that has transformed lives far beyond Pretoria.

The Special Rotary Partner Recognition went to the South African Cultivar and Technology Agency (SACTA) for their unwavering support of the Dignity Toilets Project of Rotary District 9400.

For the past two years, SACTA has contributed R1,25 million annually, enabling schools to replace unsafe pit latrines with proper ablution facilities.

In communities like Malelane, Mpumalanga, this initiative has already changed daily life for more than 500 children, who now have access to 21 safe toilets.

Inspirational words flowed from Annemarie Mostert, a Rotarian of 28 years, who delivered the keynote address.

“Peace is fragile,” she reminded the audience, “and it is the role of all of us to protect peace in our communities. You must live the values you stand for. Leadership is about asking questions and being willing to search for the answers.”

Her reflection linked the dignity toilets project with a broader vision: a society where dignity, peace, and practical care for others go hand in hand.

The evening also showcased the ongoing projects of the club, including community health days, food donations on Mandela Day, and fundraising initiatives for dignity toilets for Mmamogwai Secondary School in Hartbeespoort.
