Motorists warned of long delays on R21 during sinkhole repairs

Sanral says two northbound lanes near Olifantsfontein will close from October to February 2026 for critical rehabilitation work on the R21.

Motorists travelling from Pretoria heading northbound along the R21 can expect delays in the coming months due to a temporary closure of the two left lanes near Olifantsfontein.

Sanral has announced that the closure, which begins on October 10 and will remain in place until February 28, 2026, is necessary to allow for the rehabilitation of a sinkhole on the R21 in this area.

According to Sanral spokesperson Lwando Mahlasela, the affected section stretches toward Pretoria, with the lane closures expected to vary in length but not exceed 3km, unless required for safety reasons.

He explained that the rehabilitation is a crucial step in ensuring the long-term stability of the route, which is heavily used by motorists travelling between Johannesburg, Kempton Park, and Pretoria.

“Progress Hlahla, Sanral’s Provincial Head for Gauteng, has advised road users to plan their trips accordingly during this essential sinkhole rehabilitation,” Mahlasela said.

He added that drivers should obey all traffic signs and instructions from flag personnel on site.

“It is not only for your own safety, but also that of the construction personnel working on the project,” he said.

Mahlasela encouraged motorists to make use of alternative routes such as the M57 and M18 during the rehabilitation period to help ease congestion and minimise travel delays.

He also emphasised Sanral’s appreciation for the public’s patience during the process.
