Pretoria court to hear missing baby updates

Police confirm five-month-old Thandeka Nyamane is still missing as the court prepares to review the ongoing case of child neglect next month.

The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court will hear further proceedings in the case of the missing five-month-old Thandeka Nyamane on November 18, when investigations into her disappearance will be reviewed.

NPA regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the case is currently being handled as child neglect. She explained that the two accused women are at different stages of the legal process.

“Thandeka’s mother, who was previously arrested along with her friend shortly after the child went missing, had already been granted bail, while the second accused, described as the mother’s friend, appeared for a bail application but was denied bail.

“Investigations are ongoing, and the next court date is November 18 for further hearings,” she said.

Warrant Officer Marinda Austin confirmed that the baby has still not been located.

She said the mother has appeared in court four times since the child went missing and that all leads are being actively pursued.

“The baby has not been found yet. All leads are being investigated, and we appeal to the public: if you have any information, please contact the nearest police station,” said Austin.

The update follows little Thandeka’s disappearance from her home in Fountain Squatter Camp, Lyttelton in the early hours of September 6.

Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk previously told Rekord that two women had allegedly left their babies alone in a house at Fountain Squatter Camp in Lyttelton while they went out drinking at a nearby tavern.

“They were taking turns to check on the children. When it was her [the mother’s] turn, she found that her child was missing,” said Van Dyk.

The mother said she saw her at around 05:00, but when she returned to the house shortly after that, the baby was gone.

The missing baby is described as chubby in build, with black hair and dark eyes, of small height and average weight. She was last seen wearing a pink, fluffy onesie with a hood.

Anyone with information about where she could be found is urged to contact investigating officer, Sergeant T Sithole, at 071 675 7489.

Alternatively, residents can reach out to Carina Bam at 071 243 3065.
