Metro launches consultations on illegally developed townships
The dates for the different regions public hearings have been announced. Residents and landowners are encouraged to attend to discuss measures to legalise or manage unauthorised settlements in Tshwane.
The public hearings between Tshwane’s Illegal Township Mayoral Sub-Committee and landowners and residents of 17 identified illegal settlements will start this week.
The metro said this measure is to deal with the escalating problem of unlawfully developed townships spreading and to find long-term, lawful solutions that balance urban renewal with community needs.
The 17 illegally established townships/developments are primarily within the city’s boundaries.
These engagements are to assess the status of the illegal townships within the municipality towards developing mechanisms and measures to correct the illegality.
The committee has identified two types of illegal property development.
The first category is individual property owners who act outside of the law, using their own property without obtaining the permissions for the land use or the structures they are building.
The second category is property owners permitting individual developments on their property without proper zoning authorisation.
