Locals enjoy sunset at Fort Klapperkop

Residents came to enjoy the stunning views at the highest natural point in Pretoria, as well as local food and coffee from vendors.

The Friends of Groenkloof and Klapperkop Nature Reserves recently hosted Sundowners at Sunset at the Klapperkop Nature Reserve to celebrate the year with the community.

Despite heavy rainfall earlier in the day, clear skies met the hundreds of attendees by the time the event started in the late afternoon.

Residents could enjoy the stunning views at the highest natural point in the capital city, as well as local food and coffee from vendors – all in support of the fort’s upkeep.

Treasurer and PR representative for the Friends, Angelique Geeringh, said the sundowners serve as an opportunity for locals to come together and disconnect from the city hustle and bustle for a while, while enjoying and supporting nature.

“Any state-run entity is struggling with finances. There are various Friends groups around Pretoria, and our group specifically comes alongside Nature Conservation for our two nature reserves. We raise funds to assist in raising awareness of our magnificent nature reserves. I mean, where in the world can you be in the middle of Pretoria, the middle of a city centre, and you can go for a walk where you can see zebras, wildebeest, impalas? And you don’t even have to pay to come to Klapperkop, it’s free,” Geeringh said.

She mentioned that the Sundowners events occur as and when the Friends can organise them, as a lot of factors have to come into play.
