Local NGOs hold a homeless drive in Arcadia

Beneficiaries received food, haircuts and clothing among other donations.

Local NGOs, the Waratwa Foundation and the Blaze Topix Foundation, recently held an outreach campaign in support of the CBD’s homeless community.

The initiative, themed ‘Charity begins with you’, aims to create a safe, dignified environment, provide immediate relief, and foster a spirit of compassion within the community.

The event, which took place on December 6, was held at the intersection of Nelson Mandela Drive and Edmond Street.

This initiative served unhoused and vulnerable individuals by providing essential services, food relief, and clothing support.

Oratile Motsusi, founder of Waratwa Foundation, said that the positive response from people demonstrated the impact that simple acts of service can have on individuals experiencing homelessness.

“The success of the December 6 outreach event highlights what can be achieved when non-profit organisations, local businesses, volunteers, and law-enforcement partners unite with a shared purpose.

“The collective effort demonstrated the importance of sustained community involvement and the role it plays in improving the lives of individuals living on the streets in Pretoria’s inner city,” Motsusi said.

Throughout the day, volunteers and partners offered free meals freshly prepared and served on-site, clothing, including warm garments, daily essentials, and donated items, and haircuts from professional barbers who volunteered their services.

“This initiative serves as a reminder that meaningful change is possible when compassion is paired with action. By continuing to support outreach programmes and collaborative interventions, communities can contribute to restoring dignity, strengthening social connections, and creating pathways toward long-term support for those who need it most,” Motsusi said.

The TMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit was present throughout the event to assist with crowd control and general oversight, contributing to an orderly and secure environment.

Many organisations provided support, including Mata, Mitchwear, Mr Cheaper, Nakar Barbershop, Malgol Mafia, Mr Space 012, Mahlo’s Poultry, Anointed Barber, Classic Barber, 6lvck Cuts, and Baf’s Cheeks.

NGOs are particularly active in the metro, and other initiatives that took place this year included the Lupus Awareness Fun Walk in Mamelodi East and a Sports Against Crime event at the Shaka Residence in Shoshanguve, promoting safe play spaces.

There was also a ‘67 Meals Honouring Madiba’s Legacy’ in Danville, Pretoria West and a Winter Drive in Windhoek, Namibia, which supported vulnerable families.

At the Saulsville Arena, the theatre production Stranger Danger was presented in October, educating young children.
