Enthusiasts marvel at vintage and classic roadsters

The Pretoria Old Motor Club opened the calendar year with a well-attended ‘Bonnets Up’ event showcasing decades of motoring history.

More than 100 car enthusiasts from around Pretoria attended the Bonnets Up event on January 11.

Hosted at the Pretoria Old Motor Club’s premises in Silverton, the event attracted car lovers from across the city, featuring a wide array of vehicles spanning several decades, from the thirties to the eighties.

Vice Chairman of the club Sakkie Fischer noted that this was the first meeting of the year, emphasising the event’s purpose of providing a platform for owners to display their classic cars.

The gathering is held every second week of the month, welcoming everyone to bring their vintage vehicles. “The club is growing almost every second Sunday, with new young people joining us,” said Fischer.

He also mentioned that the club will be celebrating its 60th anniversary on April 11, which will include a tribute to one of the founding members who is still alive.

Established in 1966 by a group of old car enthusiasts, the Pretoria Old Motor Club (POMC) was created to share information, skills, and parts related to classic vehicles.

Today, POMC members collectively own over 1 500 cars and motorcycles. Members come from all walks of life, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience in various fields.

Attendees marvelled at the diverse range of vehicles on display. John Jacobs, a passionate car enthusiast, showcased three vintage vehicles dating from the 1940s to the 1950s. “I love attending these events,” he said.
