Heavy rain leaves several Centurion roads flooded

Motorists are urged to avoid the area and use alternative roads.

Several roads in Centurion remain flooded, following the heavy rains that swept across Gauteng on Sunday, prompting motorists to exercise extreme caution and avoid the affected areas.

The flooding follows the South African Weather Service’s Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms issued, which forecasted heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning, and hail.

These conditions resulted in localised flooding along vulnerable roads, low-lying areas, and bridges.

According to CERT-SA spokesperson Ruan Heynes, severe flooding has been reported on several roads, forcing authorities to close key routes to ensure public safety.

Rabie Street, End Street, and Witstinkhout Road have all been closed to traffic, with barriers placed at the affected sites. Meanwhile, Blackwoods Road remains open but is being closely monitored,” he said.

Heynes urged motorists to use alternative routes and avoid the flooded areas completely, warning that conditions could deteriorate further.

“Water levels may still rise, and some roads could be undermined beneath the surface, posing a serious risk to unsuspecting drivers.”

He also confirmed that a vehicle was stuck in the floodwater at the corner of End Street and Witstinkhout Road earlier on Monday morning.

While the occupants were able to exit the vehicle safely, Heynes emphasised that the area remains dangerous and should not be approached.

“Motorists must not attempt to drive through floodwater,” he warned.

Heynes also called on community members to remain vigilant and report any emergencies to local authorities as weather-related risks persist.

He urged residents to look out for one another and prioritise safety during the ongoing wet conditions.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have reiterated their appeal to motorists to heed warnings, use alternative routes where possible, and avoid unnecessary travel through affected parts of Centurion.
