Confusion over repair teams delays fix to persistent Mahube street water leak
A resident says meter technicians were repeatedly dispatched even though the fault involves a main pipeline. She alleges poor communication and lack of support have prolonged the issue for more than a year.
A water leak continues to flood Natanadi Street in Mahube Ext 24, despite repeated reports to the metro by Sylvia Skhosana and her family.
Skhosana said that at first she thought it was her own water meter, but when the municipal workers arrived to repair the leak, she was told that it was the main water pipe leaking, not her water meter.
She said the municipal workers told her that the workers from Tshwane Utility and Services are the ones who will be able to fix the leaking pipe.
“We are still waiting for the Tshwane Utility and Services team to fix the leak,” said Skhosana, adding that the leak has now damaged a wall on her property.
When the leak was again reported, the metro again sent the incorrect team – the one that deals only with water meters.
She stated that her family has been reporting the leak for over a year, and that nothing has been done. She said that she feels that the municipal officers are failing her, and that the ward councillor has not aided them in any way.
“It’s sad to see thousands of litres of clean and pure water go to waste every day,” she said.

Today, she has a list of reference numbers and said that none of them have ever been attended to.
“The ones that are fixing the meters outside came more than five times, [saying] that it’s not their responsibility, and it’s got nothing to do with the water meter connection; it has to do with the main water pipe underneath.”
As she had no success reporting the leak to the helpdesk, she went to the Waltloo offices to personally report the same matter. She has been doing this since last year, but that has also had no effect. Instead, she was given promises that it would be attended to, but to date, no progress has been made.
She said she has now run out of ideas on how to deal with this, because on the surface, it looks like it’s her water meter that’s leaking. Because of this, some of her neighbours have started complaining, alleging that she is not reporting the leak.
Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the metro is aware of the recurrent leak and it was resolved last year 30 October. Mashigo said a team will be dispatched to discover any new leaks and attend to them.
