Safety awareness campaign addresses inner-city crime
Factors such as bogus salespeople, armed robbers and car break-ins are among the crimes attendees were warned to look out for.
Officers from the Pretoria Central Police Station, Department of Employment and Labour, and several other groups recently met at the department’s headquarters for a discussion on crime and safety.
A Crime Information Management Analysis Centre (CIMAC) representative, Sergeant Malebo Modise; communication officer, Sergeant Thabang Nkhumise; the State Security Agency, the Tshwane metro, and internal security components such as the Compensation Fund, Information, Communication Technology (ICT), and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) also attended.
The meeting addressed various subjects, including physical security for department staff, contingency plans, occupational health, and safety measures in all their buildings.
It also outlined the plans to strengthen partnerships with law enforcement agencies, security companies operating in the municipality, and other government departments.
Nkhumise gave an overview of the role of the SAPS, further illustrating their powers and core functions in preventing, investigating, and combating crime.
He also gave safety tips on protective measures, different types of crime, and the different protocols used by the station relating to different crimes.
“If, for example, you’ve committed a common assault, you will be released on the same day you are arrested. We don’t keep you in our cells, but you are expected to appear before the Magistrate’s Court,” Nkhumise said.
“In terms of assault with intent to cause [grievous bodily harm], we have to keep you in our cells because you might cause further harm. Should it be that you are granted bail for this charge, there should be a reasonable basis as to why you have been granted bail,” he explained.
“As investigators, we look at such things. Making the point that we know where your address is, you’re not a flight risk, and also [making] it a point that you are co-operating with us at all times.”
The sergeant also said that this approach applies to all contact crimes (crimes against persons), including murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and most notably, femicide and GBV.
The station commander, Brigadier Hlengani Gibin Mashaba, thanked the Department of Employment and Labour for their continuous support and for strengthening ties with the station to ensure the safety and security of the community. He urged attendees to remain vigilant when in the CBD.
“We want to urge you to be more cautious of your surroundings, avoid walking in secluded areas, avoid carrying large sums of money on your person, and be wary of bogus salespersons in the city. Motorists, you are advised to park in designated parking spaces within the city.
“We also want to urge people to come forth with any information that may help the station to identify criminal syndicates.”
He said people can do so anonymously.
“Police visibility continues in all corners of the city with more boots on the ground,” Nkhumise said.
A brief report was given by the CIMAC office on the crime hotspots affecting the CBD, station crime statistics, and the ongoing proactive measures by the police to fight lawlessness.
The Pretoria Central police station saw a decrease of 16.5% in total contact crimes in the most recent batch of the third quarter crime statistics (October to December 2025). The largest contributor of which was a 38.1% decrease in common robbery, which dropped from 84 cases to 52 cases.
Seven fewer counts of sexual assault were reported this quarter compared to the last (from 26 to 19), and three fewer counts of assault with GBH were reported (from six to three).
Three fewer rape cases were reported this quarter (from 18 in the previous quarter to 15), as well as three fewer counts of sexual assault (down from six cases).
