Seven decades of love for Pretoria couple
Theuns and Lucelle Smit say the secret to lasting love is ‘the grace of God, mutual respect and never going to bed angry’.
After 70 years of marriage, Theuns (94) and Lucelle (96) Smit are celebrating a remarkable milestone at Masonic Haven, where their enduring love story continues to inspire residents, staff, and family alike.
The couple tied the knot on March 3, 1956, in Sterkstroom in the Eastern Cape and have since built a life centred on faith, family, and unwavering commitment to one another.
They are the proud parents of three children, Amanda, Alae and Kobus, and have five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren – all of whom remain important parts of their lives.
Theuns and Lucelle said they spent their first few years of marriage in Sterkstroom before relocating to Pretoria in the early 1960s due to circumstances beyond their control.
Despite the challenges of moving to a new city, the couple adapted and built a fulfilling life in Pretoria, becoming keen tennis players and active members of three Dutch Reformed congregations in the east of the city.
According to the couple, their secret to staying together for so long is rooted in simple but powerful principles.
“Firstly, by the grace of God. Mutual respect and our upbringing. Work together, share with one another and never go to bed angry,” they explained.
Over the decades, they learned to face disagreements head-on, but with a rule that has served them well.
“Discuss the matter, but once it has been discussed, let it go and never bring it up again,” said the couple.
The Smits’ advice to young couples today is not give up and walk away when the first challenges come.
According to the couple, people give up too quickly these days.
“Manage the problems and work through them together,” they said.
Family has also played a central role in strengthening their bond, with the couple describing family interaction as extremely important throughout their lives.
While their marriage has been built on strong values, there have also been plenty of light-hearted moments along the way.
Lucelle still laughs about the day when Theuns accidentally put on his denim slacks.
“After seven decades together, our relationship remains as strong as ever, proof that love, respect and a shared commitment can stand the test of time.”
At Masonic Haven, the couple’s anniversary was marked with a special family braai, with the retirement community donating the use of the lapa and braai area for the celebration.
Debbie Murray, marketing officer at Masonic Haven, said the couple’s milestone is a special moment for the entire community.
“It is an absolute honour to share this massive milestone with them,” said Murray.
