Woodrock: Over 30 years of second chances for animals
One of South Africa’s oldest independent pro-life animal rescue centres, Woodrock Animal Shelter is a sanctuary dedicated to animals who have been abandoned, abused, neglected, injured or forgotten.
Woodrock Animal Rescue has spent more than three decades transforming compassion into action through a simple but powerful mission to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals.
The shelter, situated in the Hennops River Valley just outside Pretoria, was founded in 1992 by Nicholas and Estelle Meldau.
Spokesperson Stella Meldau said Woodrock is one of South Africa’s oldest independent pro-life animal rescue centres – a sanctuary dedicated to animals who have been abandoned, abused, neglected, injured or forgotten.
Meldau said the animal shelter has been rescuing vulnerable animals who arrive with no one to speak for them, and often have nowhere else to go, for over 30 years.
Today, more than 500 animals call the sanctuary home, including dogs, cats, donkeys, pigs, goats, rabbits, chickens, and geese.
“Each rescue represents an intervention at a critical moment, removing animals from suffering and offering immediate safety, nourishment and care,” said Meldau.
She said Woodrock’s rescue work extends beyond its gates with outreach programmes, as the organisation funds about 200 sterilisations every month in underserved and vulnerable communities across Pretoria and surrounding areas. This helps prevent unwanted litters and reduces long-term animal suffering before it begins.

Weekly feeding schemes support over 300 dogs, while ongoing assistance reaches 10 feral animal communities.
Meldau continued, saying that rescue is only the beginning, and that at the shelter they restore health, trust and dignity to the animals.
Woodrock operates a fully equipped on-site veterinary clinic, allowing injured and ill animals to receive immediate medical attention while supporting preventative healthcare and sterilisation initiatives.
“Many animals arrive at the shelter fearful or traumatised. Patient rehabilitation, routine and human connection help them relearn safety and confidence.”
Volunteers play an essential role in this process: walking dogs, providing enrichment, and helping uncover each animal’s personality, preparing them emotionally as well as physically for life beyond the shelter.
The ultimate goal at Woodrock is to find a lasting home for each animal. Through careful assessment and responsible adoption practices, rehabilitated animals are matched with families where they can thrive.
The focus is not simply on adoption numbers, but on successful lifelong placements that ensure every animal’s second chance truly endures.
By choosing adoption, families become part of breaking the cycle of overpopulation and giving rescued animals the opportunity for long, secure and loving lives.
Meldau said beyond adoptions, Woodrock’s charity thrift stores help sustain daily operations while promoting community participation and sustainability through donated goods and clothing.
After more than 30 years of service, Woodrock Animal Rescue remains guided by the same vision that inspired its founding: a future where prevention, education and compassion mean fewer animals need rescuing.
