Referring to your article in last week’s Rekord concerning the possibility of moving the Paul Kruger statue from Church Square in central Pretoria, I think this is a wonderful idea. I am sure Oom Paul and his loyal soldiers will enjoy a new view over the city from the Voortrekker Monument, where thousands of tourists will give them a heroes’ welcome.
We rarely venture into the CBD as it has become a dirty, deteriorating area, it is a disgrace to see these historical sculptures being neglected. It is also a soft point in our reconciliation process to keep these historical artworks where they currently are. Our tourists will be much safer at the Voortrekker Monument than in the CBD, which is home to drug addicts and other criminal elements. As they say, a change is as good as a holiday.
