Dear editor
The human race never ceases to amaze me, not always in a good way.
What is it with people who feel they have to give you a piece of their mind or spread negativity wherever they go?
Does this somehow improve their feeling of self-worth or give them a sense of power? Some humans really thrive on negativity.
Not sure if this is because people are uninformed or simply cannot survive without saying something nasty. That’s why I prefer animals to humans.
Yes, I am an animal activist, bunny hugger, whatever you want to call it. And yes, I support the SPCA 100% as well as other animals shelters.
It just pains me to hear people say they care about animals but won’t blink an eye to talk rubbish. These are just a few things I’ve heard people say regularly:
“No, you can’t take that animal to the SPCA, they will just be put down.”
Please, go and see how the animals are loved and cared for and how long some of them have been there waiting for a home.
One also hears: “I’m never supporting them again as one of the staff members was rude to me.”
Never forget these are just normal people that have to put up with rude members of the public daily, in addition to all the sad things they see regarding animals.
Another misconception: “I wanted to take a dog and give it a home but they want me to pay for it.”
The adoption fee is for sterilisation, inoculations, microchipping and deworming of the animal. Try getting that done at your local vet and see what you pay for all of that.
Plus, if you’re not willing to do all of these things for the well-being of the animal then why are you getting an animal in the first place?
To people who say these things — do you really care about animals? How does destructive criticism towards the shelters and non-profit organisations benefit an animal in any way?
By badmouthing a charity organisation like the SPCA you surely cannot say you truly care. Are you supporting a shelter to make yourself feel better, or to be seen by others?
Or are you doing it to better the life of abused or abandoned animals?
Not all of our passion lies with caring for animals but if it’s not your thing, then at least don’t make harmful comments. Before you speak your mind take the time to go to a shelter and see for yourself what it’s really about.
And yes, they would love your time and animal food but also remember they need money to pay for water, electricity, wages and all the normal day-to-day expenses.
I take my hat off to the SPCA staff and other shelters that do such awesome work for the love of animals.
