After last week’s hiding against Ireland, the Springboks will seek to lift their standards on the field against England this week.
Rugby
Chris Robshaw and his troops are certainly very close to the same standard as the Irish. They did show last week against the All Blacks what they are capable of and with a bit of luck they even could have won the match against the New Zealand boys.
England’s last win over South Africa was on 18 November 2006, which means that the pale-legged Poms never had win a test against the Springboks since their current coach, Stuart Lancaster, took over the reins in 2011. There can be no doubt that the English come to Twickenham with a huge onslaught to stop this string of defeats.
On the other hand Heyneke Meyer and his team will also not be caught in the same trap as last week against the Irish. A massive onslaught could be expected from the Springboks to try to restore their proud record in the Northern Hemisphere under Meyer’s leadership.

Cricket
While the Ram Slam T20 tournament in South Africa continues, the Proteas will also be in action this weekend on their tour to Australia.
The Proteas’ T20 series against Australia ended on a disappointing note and the one-day test series started this weekend. The first one-day international between the two countries was already played on Friday in Perth. Australia won by 32 runs. On Sunday the second game in this series of five games will also take place in Perth after which the action will move to Canberra on Wednesday.
The Titans, who are in deep trouble after three successive defeats in the Ram Slam T20 series, are playing two games this weekend. On Friday they play against the Knights in Bloemfontein. Then they will move to Durban to play the Cape Cobras on Sunday.

Road Running
Good news for road running fans in Pretoria is that the half-marathon championships of Athletics South Africa (ASA) and the 10km walk championships of Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) will both form part of FitPretoria’s annual race to benefit the Jacaranda Children’s Home.
The race will take place on Saturday morning at the Kolonnade Retail Park in the north of Pretoria. Plenty of parking will be available. There will be four races in which athletes can participate on the day. The national 21km championship will begin at 5:40. There will also be a half marathon for those that are not part of the national championship. They will run a 21km race to benefit the Jacaranda Children’s Home and their race will start at 06:00.
The 10km race starts at 06:20 and walkers who participate in the provincial championship will also be part of it.
There will also be a fun run over 5km for those who just want a nice warm up run/walk. The fun run starts at 6:10. Enquiries: Bossie Boshoff: 083-355-7323.
Soccer
As far as South Africans are concerned, the big football of the weekend will be the AFCON play-off between Bafana Bafana and Sudan on Saturday. The match will be played on the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
This game is very important for South Africa as Bafana Bafana can finally qualify for next year’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations with a victory over Sudan.
Kick-off at the Moses Mabhida Stadium is set for 15:00 on Saturday.
Boxing
After he officially renounced his IBO world title in the super middleweight division, Tommy Oosthuizen decided he would henceforth box in the light heavyweight division. This excellent boxer has, according to all indications, set aside all the demons that afflicted his career the past year or two. Oosthuizen gets the chance to bring his career back on track this weekend when he will fight against the Russian, Denis Grachev. The latter is a former WBC Youth Intercontinental light heavyweight champion and he also was the light heavyweight champion of the North American Boxing Federation in 2012, after he relocated to California in America. The battle takes place at the Emperors Palace Casino in Kempton Park.
In another fight at the same tournament, Kevin Lerena and Johnny Muller will clash in a bout over 10 rounds. There is also great excitement for this fight in the junior heavyweight (cruiserweight) division. Lerena is the current WBC Youth Silver cruiserweight champion as well as the WBF Africa cruiserweight champion.
Muller is the former South African light heavyweight champion and the WBC International Silver Light heavyweight champion. He recently decided to move one weight division upwards and will fight as a junior heavyweight (cruiserweight).
In the other bouts at the tournament Mbulelo Nxazonke and Thabang Ramagole fight against each other in the junior flyweight division, while Ali Funeka of South Africa and Roman Belaev of Russia will be involved in a fight for the IBO welterweight world title over twelve rounds.
