Khune keen to join Sundowns despite new Chiefs contract
Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune has expressed his desire to play for Mamelodi Sundowns before he retires from football.
Despite having extended his contract with Kaizer Chiefs, Itumeleng Khune has dropped the clearest hint that he will leave the club at the end of the season.
Khune said he was at a stage in his career where he needed to play regularly. He did not hide the fact that he was unhappy sitting on the bench at Kaizer Chiefs.
Having lost his position in Bafana Bafana and also at his club Kaizer Chiefs to Brilliant Khuzwayo, transfer speculation to Mamelodi Sundowns is rife. “I will surely love to play for Mamelodi Sundowns. It is my wish to play for them before I retire from football,” Khune said.
He did not rule out the possibility of the switch happening next season. “It is a very long time between now and next season. Anything can happen, but for now I am focused at Chiefs,” he said.
However, Mamelodi Sundowns will have to buy off his contract. Big spending Mamelodi Sundowns have always made it clear that they would like to sign Khune and make him the highest paid player in South Africa by offering him a record-breaking package.
The Pretoria outfit coach, Pitso Mosimane, has never hidden his admiration for the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and the fact that he would like to sign him. Backed by billionaire president and team owner, Patrice Motsepe, Downs have not been afraid to open the chequebook whenever they needed to.
Sundowns are prepared to offer Khune a monster package that would make him the highest paid footballer in the history of the PSL.
An injury he suffered near the start of the season has hampered his move to an unnamed overseas club. The injury also cost him a chance of making the Africa Cup of Nations finals squad.
