SPORT: Cycle4Cansa bigger and better

The Cycle4Cansa mountain bike (MTB) classic took place on Saturday morning at Sun City.

The mountain bike race, which is now in its 12^th year, has become one of the must-do events on the MTB calendar.

The race consisted of a 25km circuit-based route which is suitable for children older than 12 who wanted to enjoy a family ride with parents

The main race was 50km where participants had to complete two circuits of the short course.

The scenic route was stunning and game rangers had to keep the elephants and rhinos to one side to allow riders to pass through the heart of the reserve.

Bestmed medical scheme executive manager Wicus Kotze said the race has grown over the years.

“As Bestmed, we are extremely proud to be the main sponsors of this amazing race. We have been involved with the race for the past six years where it has grown.

“It is important for us to raise awareness through cycling because we believe that there are different ways to reach out and help fight cancer. In a way, we are also promoting a healthy lifestyle through cycling and running,” he said.

 Kotze also said the race has raised millions of funds and urged people to get involved.

“Last year, we had 3 000 entries, and this year we expected around 5 000 participants for the mountain bike and road race.

Most cyclists were from Gauteng and North West, but there were are a few from other provinces such as Mpumalanga and Limpopo, he said.

Bradley Potgieter won the 50km men’s race while Danielle Strydom won the 50km women’s race.
