Moshate Cup in full swing this year

Last year, Atteridgeville defeated Mamelodi 20-5 in the final; while Eersterust won the plate final.

Hundreds of school children will be showcasing their rugby skills at the fourth annual Moshate Cup festival.

The festival, held at St Alban’s College in Pretoria, aims at improving rugby in Pretoria townships and also supporting underprivileged children.

St Alban’s school’s director of rugby and coach Kennedy Tsimba said hundreds of people were expected to attend the finals on Saturday.

“We have a total of eight teams competing. The teams come from the surrounding townships and all have their eyes set on the big prize,” said Tsimba.

“Last year, Atteridgeville defeated Mamelodi 20-5 in the final; while Eersterust won the plate final.

“The good news is that we have Hammanskraal competing at this year’s Moshate Cup for the very first time. This shows that the festival or tournament is growing and reaching new heights,” he said.

Tsimba said girls were also competing this time around.

“In the past, we had a handful of girls involved, so this year we have four teams in the finals which is exciting.”

He said the festival provides academic enhancement programme.

“We have identified five boys so far in this year’s edition, and we are looking at bringing them into the system and uplifting them and getting them more into comprehensive programmes.”

Tsimba, who’s a former Blue Bulls player, thanked sponsors such as Standard Bank for helping make the festival relevant and exciting

“In the past few years, this tournament has gained momentum. I’ve seen more township kids playing the game (of rugby),” he said.

“It shows that there is a love for rugby in black and coloured communities and it’s our job as coaches to scout and develop these young players.”
