The second annual Morula half-marathon attracted scores of athletes at Giant stadium in Soshanguve. Pick n Pay Soshanguve and the Morula athletics club collaborated to make the race a truly memorable occasion.
Runners took to the streets of Soshanguve with a mission to bag the big prize. Fun runners and walkers turned up for a 5km and 10km event, with more serious atheletes taking on the 21.1km half-marathon.
“The proceeds of the event will go to the needy, like an organisation supporting Alzheimer sufferers. This illness is a challenge, especially in our communities. Last year we created awareness for Down’s syndrome. This marathon is not about business, it is an outreach project,” said George Senosha, owner of Pick n Pay Soshanguve.
Although there were a few complaints about the online registration, the marathon itself was a huge success. Pick n Pay donated R5 000 to the Alzheimer Association and a car was handed over to the Reabetswe Le Ditsala Children’s Project by Give Me Four Cars.
In the 5km run, Lubisi Welcome won gold, William Mabena silver and and Tshepo Aphane managed to secure third place.
“I am happy with the silver medal. It was not easy, because last year I was involved in a car accident and this was my first race since I started training earlier this year,” Maben said.
Lucky Mohale, Giftmore Mudzingantama and Lucas Jani were the winners of the gold, silver and bronze medals for the 10km run respectively. There was no verification for the 21.1 km race.
