Sport Highlights, 29-31 January
From next week the Proteas have the chance for revenge against England for their defeat in the Test series, when the One-day International series between the two teams start next Wednesday.
After the slower test series, the cricket will now become faster and more exciting with one-day clashes, while the Australian Open tennis tournament reaches a climax this weekend.
Cricket
The Test series between South Africa and England ended with the brilliant victory for AB de Villiers and his troops in Centurion the past week.
But it is far from the end of the struggle between these two teams. The one-day series starts next week Wednesday in Bloemfontein, so there are still many international cricket to look forward to.
Meanwhile, the local Momentum ODI series will continue from this weekend. The Titans, who are fourth on the log after the first round, cannot afford to lose another game. They will be involve in two matches this coming weekend.
On Friday 29 January they meet the Knights on Willowmoore Park in Benoni. This is a day/night game and will start at 14:00. On Sunday they travel to the Eastern Cape to play against the Warriors in a day-game, which will start at 10:00.
Athletics
Most runners should by now be reasonably fit again. Therefore the time is right to take on the year’s first major standard marathon. In the Wonderpark Akasia Road Race they will find such a race.
This event consists of a choice of four different distances. Except for the 42,2km marathon, there will also be a 21,1km half-marathon, a10km road race and a 5km fun run. The race takes place at Wonderpark shopping centre in Akasia.
The address is 344 Brits Road (corner of Heinrich Avenue), Akasia. Starting times is as follows: 42.2km starts at 05:30am; 21.1km starts at 05:45am; 10km starts at 06:00 and the 5km Fun Run starts at 06:10am. Enquiries at Altje Conradie on 082-372-7093.
Soccer
All three the local Pretoria soccer teams will be in action in the Premier league this weekend. SuperSport United, who still struggles to get a place at the top of the log, will have a tough match against Free State Stars on Saturday night.
Fortunately they play at home in the Lucas Moripe stadium. The game starts at 18:00.
Mamelodi Sundowns also play on Saturday night. They will travel to KwaZulu-Natal to play against Maritzburg United and this game starts at 20:15. The Brazilians will try to hold on to their first place on the log and therefore they need another win.
AmaTuks desperately need a victory, not only to improve their log position, but also as a morale booster. They are still second last (15th) on the log.
The students takes on Platinum Stars in the Royal Bafokeng stadium in Rustenburg on Sunday. The game starts at 15:30.
Tennis
South Africa’s hopes in the Australian Open tennis tournament, Raven Klaasen and his doubles partner Rajeev Ram, unfortunately lost this week in the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles division.
However, there are still plenty of action waiting this weekend. Both the men’s and women’s singles final should attract attention. It will respectively be played on Saturday and Sunday.
