Spar’s popular night race made easier
Although it still takes place entirely on the ARC Campus, the start and end to this year's Spar Irene Lantern Race have changed.

The famous SPAR Irene lantern race is not known for being tough but from this year, this annual race will become considerably easier.
The reason for this is the new traffic and parking arrangements. Race organiser, Irene Athletics Club, has moved the race to another venue within the Agricultural Research Council’s (Arc) Irene campus.
The race will now be closer to the Nellmapius entrance, across the road from Denel.
This avails abundant parking and to the delight of participants, easier access and exit routes.
This romantic race, celebrating its sweet 16th birthday, takes place on Wednesday 10 February. Due to the new venue, the race will automatically have an altered route. The 10km route follows tar roads, while the 5km route, as was customary in the past, still has an off-road section, which makes it unsuitable for wheelchairs and prams.
Participants are reminded that no pets are allowed on the Arc premises.
The race organiser encourages people to arrive early, and enjoy the summer twilight on the farm, and to bring their picnic blankets and baskets. Food and drinks will also be on sale at the beer tent. The race starts at 18:30. Visit www.irenerunner.co.za for more.
