Sport Highlights 5-7 February
While the cricket season is still in full swing, the rugby season also begins this weekend. Along with all the other sports, weekends thus becoming busier.
While the one-day internationals cricket games between the Proteas and England started this week, schools athletics are also building momentum on the way to the inter-high meetings. Meanwhile the rugby season also officially starts this week.
Cricket
While the first one-day international match between the Proteas and England in Bloemfontein has been completed on Wednesday, the action moves to Port Elizabeth over the weekend. Saturday’s match in PE is a day-game and starts at 10:00. On Tuesday, 9 February Pretoria’s cricket fans can march to SuperSport Park for the third game in the series. This clash is a day-night match and starts at 13:30.
Since the Titans loss on Sunday to the Warriors in East London, they only have a theoretical chance left to get into the semi-final of the Momentum one-day series. They cannot afford to lose any more games, so they will have to win against the Cape Cobras on Friday in Benoni. This game starts at 14:00.
Rugby
The Varsity Shield kicked off last Monday, but fans can look forward to the first Varsity Cup action on Monday 8 February. Tuks will seek revenge in their first game, because they play against Pukke of Potchefstroom, who eliminated them last season in the semi-finals. The game will be played at the Tuks Stadium and starts at 16:45.
TUT, who had a bye last Monday when the Varsity Shield section started, will play against Wits in Johannesburg on Monday. The game starts at 18:30.
Meanwhile the well-known early-season series for open clubs, the Assupol club series, also begins this weekend.
Pretoria Police takes on Rustenburg Impala, Naka Bulls plays against Tuks, Harlequins will play away against UJ and Tuine hosts Centurion.
Soccer
All three Pretoria-based football teams will be in action in the Premier league this weekend. AmaTuks comes first in line, takin on Orlando Pirates at the Tuks Stadium on Saturday night at 20:15. Just as AmaTuks, Pirates is struggling and both teams desperately need a win to move away from the danger zone on the log.
On Sunday SuperSport United play at home (Lucas Moripe Stadium) against Ajax Cape Town. This game starts at 15:30.
Log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns will travel to the James Motiatsi Stadium in Orkney to play against Free State Stars. This game also starts at 15:30 on Sunday.
Athletics
The Magnolia Club presents their well-known McCarthy Toyota half marathon at Rietondale Park, Rietondale this weekend. The event consists of a 21,2km half marathon, a 10km road race and a 5km fun run. The half marathon starts at 06:00 and the 10km race 06:20. The fun run follows at 06:25.
The same course, with long, straight, fairly flat stretches, relaxing down hills and short, challenging hills through the suburbs of Villeria, Waverley and Rietfontein will be used.
