SPAR Lantern Race – avoid traffic congestion, arrive early
There will be picnic spots available for participants and race supporters with refreshments on sale at the SPAR Lantern Race.
The clock has been counting down and now finally, the SPAR Irene Lantern Race is upon us. So what do you need to know about the race?
The SPAR Lantern Race takes place on 10 February 2016 at the Agricultural Research Council Irene Campus and starts promptly at 18:30. Thousands of runners will be attending the event to take part in the 10km race and 5km fun run and organizers are encouraging everyone to arrive early. They have also advised that the main gate will be open for entry only and will be closed from 18:20 onwards. The gate at Denel will be open all evening for entry and exit from the event. There are picnic spots available for participants and race supporters with refreshments on sale.
“The SPAR Lantern Race is a great outing for families and friends,” said SPAR North Rand Marketing Director, Jerome Jacobs. “SPAR has a long standing tradition of giving back to the community by sponsoring events that bring people together and we are looking forward to seeing everyone there enjoying a wonderful summer evening. It is going to be an exciting race as we all look forward to seeing whether Mapaseka holds on the record time she set last year.”
There will be cash prizes awarded to the top runners as well as loads of SPAR Grocery Hamper spot giveaways. The first 10 men, 10 women and all category winners receive gold medals and the next 100 finishers will be given silver medals. The first 4500 to finish the 5km and 10km route will receive bronze medals. Walkers are welcome on all distances but the race organizers have warned participants that this year’s route is not wheelchair friendly.
