Sport Highlights for this weekend
While the schools athletics season builds up to a climax and the rugby season is already in full swing, cricket and golf will, for old times sake, still dominate the sports scene this weekend.
Although there are cricket and rugby action this weekend, the Tshwane Open Golf Tournament at the Pretoria Country Club will probably attract the most attention.
Golf
The 2016 Tshwane Open will showcase one of the most exciting new eras in South African golf when the quartet of Brandon Stone, Haydn Porteous, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Zander Lombard tee it up at Pretoria Country Club.
The R18.5 million tournament will be another opportunity for the new young stars of the game to showcase their skills in a major European Tour-Sunshine Tour co-sanctioned event. The action starts on Thursday 11 February and the fourth Tshwane Open champion will be crowned by late afternoon on Sunday.
Cricket
The one-day series between the Proteas and England gained new life after South Africa’s excellent victory in the third match in Centurion on Tuesday.
This weekend’s two games will determine the winner of the series. On Friday, the action move to the Wanderers stadium in Johannesburg for the fourth match. This game will start at 14:00.
The last, and hopefully also deciding game, will be played on Sunday at Newlands in Cape Town. This is a day-match, so the action will start at 10:00 already.
Meanwhile the Momentum One-day provincial series in South Africa also continues. The Titans still have a small chance to sneak in the back door to the play-off games, if they win both their last two games. They travel to Durban this weekend to play against the Dolphins on Saturday. This game will start at 14:00.
On Wednesday next week the Titans play at home in Centurion against the Highveld Lions. This game also starts at 14:00.
Rugby
We got two weeks left before the SupeRugby season gets underway. Die-hard Bulls supporters who want to see their team in action before the season starts officially, can drive to Polokwane this Saturday when Adriaan Strauss and his men take on the Lions in their last warm-up game of the season. The game starts at 17:00 in the Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane.
On Monday night, Tukkies takes on Shimlas, the defending champions in the Varsity Cup. This game starts at 18:00 in the Tuks rugby stadium.
TUT also plays at home in the Varsity Shield competition and their opponent will be the University of the Western Cape (UWC). This game also starts at 18:30.
Soccer
The Premier Soccer league is already past the halfway mark of the season and Mamelodi Sundowns is still leading the log relatively comfortable. They already played on Wednesday and thus enjoys a welcome off weekend.
Pretoria’s two other teams in the league, SuperSport United and AmaTuks, who are both struggling at the bottom of the log, will play each other this weekend in a derby game at the Lucas Moripe stadium in Atteridgeville. This game starts at 15:30 on Sunday afternoon.
