Local naval officers earn coveted Midmar Mile medal
Two local naval officers were part of a team of 80 who took part in the Midmar Mile in Pietermaritzburg this year.
Two Pretoria naval officers recently took part in the world’s largest open water swimming event, the Midmar mile, in the Midmar dam near Pietermaritzburg.
Rear Admiral Rusty Higgs and Captain Francois du Toit both swam the eight mile stretch of this challenging swimming marathon.
Rear Admiral Higgs, the patron of SANDF swimming, led a strong team of 80 swimmers to tackle the Midmar.
On receiving their coveted medals, the naval officers said they would be back to swim another Midmar next year.
This year, it was compulsory for all participants in the company relays to wear safety devices in the form of a bright orange buoy.
All swimmers also wore a tag to record their entry and exit of the water.
According to Umgeni Water, the water of the Midmar dam was healthy and safe for the swimmers despite the drought and the general state of South Africa’s rivers and dams.
