Sport highlights, 19 – 21 February
For sports teams such as the Proteas, Mamelodi Sundowns, AmaTuks Soccer Team and the Tuks Varsity Cup rugby team a very important weekend for action lies ahead.
In this last weekend before the start of a long provincial rugby season, the T20 cricket series between South Africa and England will certainly draw the most attention this weekend.
Cricket
The two T20 matches which the Proteas will play this weekend against England are much more significant than the fact that South Africa could win two of the three series against England if they manage to win both games. It will also be an ideal opportunity to prepare for the coming T20 World Cup, to be held from 8 March to 3 April in India.
The first game will take place on Friday 19 February at Newlands in Cape Town. This game will start at 18:00. Sunday’s game at the Wanderers in Johannesburg is a day-game and will start at 14:30.
Athletics
Top South African athletes and fun runners will hit the streets of Pretoria on Saturday at one of the biggest road-running events in Gauteng – the Bestmed Tuks Race. The event comprises a choice of a 21,1km half-marathon, 10km road race, 5km fun run and a special 1km race, as well as a 10km wheelchair race. The proceeds of the 1km race will be donated to Cansa and the 1km fun runners will receive a pink flag. Enquires: Prof Vollie Spies 083-417-7377.
Soccer
The Premier League continues this weekend and all three the local teams will again be in action.
AmaTuks is still struggling at the bottom of the log and they urgently needs a few wins. They will have to dig deep when they face Wits on Friday, because the Johannesburg students are currently second on the log. This game starts at 20:00.
Pretoria’s other two teams are both in action on Saturday. Mamelodi Sundowns are now comfortably ahead on the log and they are just a few wins away from the trophy. They face Golden Arrows at the Lucas Moripe stadium at 18:00.
A little more than two hours later, at 20:15, SuperSport United will take to the field at the Cape Town stadium for their game against Kaizer Chiefs.
Rugby
Tuks are in deep trouble in the Varsity Cup after they lost their first two games at home. Things do not get any easier for Pote Human’s team. On Monday night (22 February) they will travel to Stellenbosch to play against top of the log team, Maties. This game starts at 19:00.
