Warrior Race series conclude on high note

The Jeep Warrior Race series ended on a high note last weekend at Legends MX east of Pretoria.

The final Jeep Warrior obstacle course race for 2016 lit up Donkerhoek east of Pretoria with its massive turnout, hard core zeal and memorable atmosphere last week.

With over 6 000 participants that took part over the weekend, The Warrior Race is Africa’s biggest obstacle course race (OCR) and promotes an active, healthy lifestyle while stressing the importance of being brave and overcoming challenges that puts your body, mind and spirit to the ultimate test.

With a choice of three distances, The Warrior Race offered athletes from different sporting backgrounds the opportunity to compete with one another, to live out their sense of adventure and to break barriers never thought possible.

Last weekend’s event was the national finals for the year, with Thomas Van Tonder and Hanneke Dannhauser being crowned OCR king and queen at the race. Both athletes are also the overall winners of the series consisting of eight events, walking away with R25 000 each in prize money on the day, as well as an additional R25 000 as overall series winners.

“It was an awesome day with great terrain, lots of downhills and technical routes. Overall it was a fantastic race and I am so grateful to have finished first,” said Dannhauser.

She further encourages other athletes to pick up, get up and never give up.

For Van Tonder, third time was the charm as he finally achieved his goal to become the overall national winner.

“I’m very happy to take home the series. I am very blessed! It’s been a hard race but an incredible day out,” he said excitedly.

The last event of the year saw the introduction of a brand new Short Course race. It was a high intensity race, that removed the running endurance aspect of all the three categories and focused on conquering 10 obstacles over a 600mm stretch that includes rowing, kettle carry, rope climbing, tyre drills, balancing logs and a wall of China to name a few. Participants were in race against time to post their best times possible, with the top five women’s and men’s categories later battling it out to be crowned Short Course champion. Participants can look forward to this course during the first two events in the series in 2017.

With incredible feedback regarding the obstacles and the event itself at Legends MX, as well as the series overall in 2016, next year looks to be even bigger and better with its innovative obstacles and emphasis on teamwork. Participants can expect to get even more wet and dirty in 2017 but still have a guaranteed experience of a lifetime.

Dates for 2017’ events will be made public on 1 December, as well as big announcement concerning the series.
