Elite and novice runners, family, friends, and spectators from across Gauteng, will be lighting up the beautiful and historic Pretoria suburb of Irene as they take part in the 2017 SPAR Irene Lantern race.

The race route that begins and ends at Irene ARC Campus, will be illuminated the 4000 plus runners taking part who will be wearing headlamps to light their way.

“SPAR is really excited to be a part of the lantern race again in 2017. SPAR North Rand is known for supporting sport – and running in particular – in the region and we pride ourselves on helping build local races into running events that are highlights on the local running calendar,” said SPAR North Rand Marketing Director, Jerome Jacobs.

“The Lantern Race has grown in popularity year on year to become the best supported 10 km night race in South Africa for the past seven years, attracting almost 4000 runners,” Jacobs added.

According to Jacobs, this year, the race start time is moving from 18:30 to 19:00 so that as the skies become darker, the runners will be able to wear headlamps to really light up the race route.

The SPAR Lantern race takes place on 15 February 2017 at the Agricultural Research Council Irene Campus and offers both the 10km route and a 5km Fun Run. There will be cash prizes awarded to the top runners as well as loads of SPAR Grocery Hamper spot giveaways.

The first 10 men, 10 women and all category winners receive gold medals and the next 100 finishers will be given silver medals. The first 3000 to finish the 5km and 10km route will receive bronze medals.
