Local golfer leads way for PGA of SA team in Turkey

A local golfer from the Pretoria Country Club was the star of the South African team at the recent Europe International Team Championship.

Pretoria Country Club’s Henk Alberts capped his debut in the PGA’s of Europe International Team Championship in Turkey last week by finishing as the leading South African in the individual competition.

Alberts was selected alongside Gauteng’s Kenneth Dube and KwaZulu-Natal’s Johan Smit as the three-man team to represent the PGA of South Africa at the tournament played at the prestigious Gloria Golf Club New Course in Belek, and which featured 19 countries competing.

In the team competition, the South Africans finished tied 11th overall behind winners Germany. The Germans took the title on a team total of 27 under par, with South Africa finishing the 72-hole event on eight over par.

In the individual competition, Alberts finished as the leading South African in a share of 15th place on two over par behind winner Dennis Küpper of Germany on 18 under par.

“It was my first year competing in the tournament and it was a fantastic experience. The course was stunning, and the level of competition was very high. My own game got better as the tournament progressed. I’d put in quite a bit of work on my game beforehand and that helped,” said Alberts.

He said that he also went to see John Dickson (the PGA professional at The Els Club, Copperleaf) for a lesson and that made a big difference.

Alberts’s playing time is limited because of the work he does at his Henk Alberts Golf Academy, but he is looking forward to teeing it up as one of 12 PGA of South Africa professionals who have qualified for the upcoming Eye of Africa PGA Championship on the Sunshine Tour in early February.

“I’m really looking forward to playing in a competitive Sunshine Tour event again,” said the former touring professional.
