First class tennis seen at Wilson Challenge
Top quality tennis was the hallmark of the recent Wilson Challenge Gauteng North Mini tennis tournament in Groenkloof.
The first Wilson Challenge Gauteng North Mini tennis tournament of the year was recently presented at the Groenkloof Tennis stadium in Pretoria.
Top junior players, from as young as u.12, as well as players in the open category entered the tournament. Altogether 214 players came from all over Gauteng to be involved. Several of South Africa’s best juniors were in action and experts were impressed with the quality of tennis that was seen.
Lourens Venter, chairman of Gauteng North’s junior tennis, told Rekord the atmosphere at the tournament was one of excitement and spirits were high, especially with the new positive winds blowing for the sport in South Africa.

Many of the players who were in action, are part of the Gauteng North Junior Tennis Squad. This is an invitational squad for the top tennis players in Gauteng North Province in the u.10 to u.18 age groups. Some of the top coaches in Pretoria work with the players in this squad. They practise together and compete against one another on Saturday mornings at Groenkloof Tennis stadium. Inclusion in this squad does not mean that you have earned Gauteng North Junior Tennis provincial colours, but from this group of players an interprovincial team is selected to compete against other provinces.
