The SPAR Irene Lantern night road race took place last week, attracting some of the province’s top runners and resulting in outstanding winning times.

The turn out this year was remarkable – with nearly 5000 athletes taking part – proving the popularity of SPAR’s annual night race event. Families turned out to enjoy the post race festivities and the prize giving was wholeheartedly applauded by the large crowd who gathered to enjoy some fresh air and a night under the stars in the tranquil Irene surrounds.

Last year’s ladies open victor, Rutendo Nyahora, took the top spot once again in spite of a bad fall and injury on the race route. Liziwe Mabona followed in second place and Catherine Skosana took third. The overall race winner was Lucky Mohale who took first place in the Men’s Open category with a time of 31:34.

SPAR North Rand Marketing Director, Jerome Jacobs, commented on the success of this year’s Lantern race saying that he was thrilled that SPAR had once again hosted such an exciting event.

“I just love the fact that this race is held at night. It’s such a unique experience on our annual running calendar and based on the amazing vibe here tonight, it is clear that the runners agree. It is always great to see such a big turnout of people enjoying themselves – whether they come to run competitively, walk the 5km or just cheer our runners on, it’s always a fun night out,” said a satisfied Jacobs.
