Titans recover with two consecutive bonus-point victories

The Titans are back on track in the Momentum one-day series after two brilliant victories the past weekend.

The Titans compensated for their poor start to this year’s Momentum one-day series by earning two bonus point victories against the Cape Cobras and Highveld Lions at the weekend respectively.

On Friday Albie Morkel and his men beat the Cape Cobras by 158 runs. Morkel won the toss and elected to bat on a very average wicket. The Titans’ opening batsmen, Henry Davids (163) and Johathan Vandiar (153) then laid a brilliant foundation with an opening partnership of 313 runs. The rest of the team continued to build on that and they eventually scored exactly 400 runs in their allotted 50 overs.

Then the Titans bowlers also put up their hands bowling their opponents out for 242 in the 35th over.

On Sunday Morkel and his team were back at home in Centurion to take on the Highveld Lions. They again batted first, having being put in by Mangaliso Mosehle, who had won the toss for the Lions.

Davids (63) was once again a pillar of strength in the home side’s innings, assisted this time by captain Morkel (61). The Titans eventually got 268 for the loss of nine wickets so this time they would rely heavily on the bowlers to win the game.

Junior Dala and Eldred Hawken stepped up and claimed three wickets apiece to knock the stuffing out of the Lions’ batting to clinch a second bonus-point win in three days for the Titans. Shaun von Berg and Davids wrapped up the tail with two wickets each.

The Lions were eventually bowled out for 159 to lose by 109 runs.

Having lost their opening game of the competition, the Titans have catapulted themselves to the top of the table with 10 points – two more than the second-placed Dolphins.

This weekend the Titans will play another two games in the series. On Friday they take on the Knights on their alternative home ground in Benoni then travel to meet the Warriors in East London on Sunday.
