Blaauw hungry for Tshwane Open glory

Jacques Blaauw, one of the local golf stars who will play in the Tshwane Open this weekend, believes he is a better player than two years ago when he was second in the tournament.

Jacques Blaauw heads into Thursday’s first round of the Tshwane Open confident that he can go one better than his second-place finish here in 2015.

That year Blaauw lost out by only one stroke to home favourite George Coetzee.

But Blaauw returned to Pretoria Country Club with a lot more confidence after making his first trip to play the Web.com Tour in America last month.

It was a worthwhile exercise as Blaauw achieved a finish of tied sixth in his first tournament – the Club Colombia Championship.

“That has kind of set up the year for me in the States,” he said at Pretoria Country Club this week.

“I want to focus on the Web.com Tour because I want to play more in America than Europe, and I’ve started well over there.”

Blaauw believes a season on the Web.com Tour will take his game to the next level.

“You want to improve and play against the best players in the world, and you often get some PGA Tour players who cannot get into a tournament that week playing on the Web.com Tour.

“I want to test my game against theirs and it was great to finish top 10 in my first event there. The top 25 on the Web.com at the end of the year graduate to the PGA Tour, and that’s the goal for me.”
